![]() While physicists want to use the upgraded accelerator to probe the rules of the Standard Model and learn more about the Higgs boson, upgrades to the LHC's four main detectors also leave it well positioned to search for physics beyond what is already known. This is because the model, despite being the most comprehensive and accurate one so far, has enormous gaps, making it totally incapable of explaining where the force of gravity comes from, what dark matter is made up of, or why there is so much more matter than antimatter in the universe. Though the model has been around in its final form since the mid-1970s, physicists are far from satisfied with it and are constantly looking for new ways to test it and, if they're lucky, discover new physics that will make it fail. One of the LHC's goals is to further scrutinize the Standard Model, the mathematical framework physicists use to describe all of the known fundamental particles in the universe and the forces through which they interact. Atom smashers like the LHC detect possible new particles by looking for telltale decay products, as the heavier particles are generally short-lived and immediately break down into lighter particles. And the more energy they have, the more massive the particles they can produce by smashing together. The faster those protons go, the more energy they have. ![]() The result? New and sometimes exotic particles are formed. Inside the LHC's 17-mile-long underground ring, protons zip around at near light-speed before slamming into each other. "We will measure the strengths of the Higgs boson interactions with matter and force particles to unprecedented precision, and we will further our searches for Higgs boson decays to dark matter particles as well as searches for additional Higgs bosons," Andreas Hoecker, a spokesperson of the LHCs ATLAS collaboration, an international project that includes physicists, engineers, technicians, students and support staff, said in a statement. During the two previous stints, running from 2009 to 20 to 2018, the atom smasher shored up physicists' understanding of how the basic building blocks of matter interact - called the Standard Model - and led to the discovery of the long-predicted Higgs boson, the elusive particle which gives all matter its mass. The upgrades to the accelerator's particle beams have done more than spike their energy range an increased level of compactness, making the beams denser with particles, will increase the probability of a collision so much that the accelerator is expected to capture more particle interactions in its third run than it did in its previous two combined. ![]() With these fixes completed, scientists want to use the gigantic accelerator to smash protons together at record-breaking energies of up to 13.6 trillion electron volts (TeV) - an energy level that should up the odds of the accelerator producing particles not yet observed by science. Located at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, the nearly 17-mile-long (27 kilometer) loop was fired up today after spending four years offline for upgrades. ![]() ![]() The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator. ![]()

![]() ![]() So I'm kind of just happily surprised to see that there even are covers! It's just like when I was a kid, except back then during the PS1 era it would've been the game's logo against a white background, no exceptions. I think WoW Cata was the last one, and even that was basically just a "this is probably the last time we'll ever do this so let's line up for the release of a game one last time". I mean my real reaction as a PC gamer in particular is basically that I don't think I've actually bought a physical copy of any game where cover art has been a factor for at least a decade. The Zenos one is a little bit better to my eyes, but would risk getting lost among similar covers in a video game aisle, when people still went to physical stores. The Zenos one looks cleaner, but the "title of game against background single imposing villain and/or antihero dude trying to look as grimdark as possible" has kind of been done before. I will also say that neither cover does a lot for me, though. Still, it's the second expansion to an MMO, so the main demographic would be existing players. And one has to wonder if cover art shouldn't be more about enticing you before the fact than feeding your nostalgia afterwards. Which means the familiarity of it really only becomes a factor after the fact. The rest are basically all characters that were either introduced or redesigned for Stormblood, or for setting up it's story in preceding patches. Like at the start of Stormblood Raubahn and Yugiri (and Derplander) are the only faces there that have been around for a while. Also a lot of the faces on there wouldn't really be people I'm connected to anyways. I imagine it doesn't do much to draw interest from new players, though. ![]() So as an actual player of the game it appeals to me. Now because I'm familiar with the characters I'd be happy to see all my peeps on there in that human pyramid of faces. It's fairly clean while the left one just has a lot going on. This will display as: Hildibrand is my heroĪesthetically I gotta say I think the Zenos one look better. If you're posting a submission with spoilers in the body or potentially comments, click "spoiler" after you've submitted it. ![]()
![]() The national governing body has been losing ground on both fronts, most recently because of the pandemic, and over the years because of the growing popularity of other martial arts, such as jujitsu and taekwondo, that have kept judo in the shadows in America. The USA Judo P3 Program is sponsored by USA Judo, the six-person operation in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that has helped Kayla Harrison and Ronda Rousey, now of Ultimate Fighting Championship fame, bring Olympic medals back home, but that also must constantly nourish its own grassroots system. Wright was shot and killed by an officer who thought she was reaching for her taser when it was, in fact, her gun. The goal is to avoid situations the likes of which led to Floyd's death and, just last week, to the death of Daunte Wright, whose funeral was Thursday. ![]() The main concept over the week of classes held at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy centered on teaching cops how to engage suspects verbally, then employ physical judo techniques if needed, to deescalate confrontations without using deadly force. Last summer's headlines pushed these courses, which had been in development since 2018, to the top of the priority list. Because the sport, known by insiders as "the gentle way" of martial arts, has little emphasis on striking and is considered less violent than some of its brethren, some leaders in judo, and in policing, saw an opportunity to use the discipline to rethink officer training. ![]() The judo project is, by any account, an outside-the-box idea. That's been a common refrain over a year's worth of police shootings and protests, all of which have been underscored by calls for police reform. "All law-enforcement officers I know, we feel we need to bring that back in line somehow." "The social contract between police officers and the public is degrading a bit," said Joe Yungwirth, a trainer at the workshop who built his career doing counterterrorism work for the FBI and now runs a judo academy in North Carolina. They came to the classes with the idea that judo, the martial art with a deep global history and an imprint at the Olympics, but still shallow roots in the United States, might be able to help fix it. No one attending the conference would deny that the profession failed the day Floyd died with Chauvin's knee on his neck. ![]() ![]() Wampanoag men were mainly responsible for hunting and fishing, while women took care of farming and gathering wild fruits, nuts, berries, and shellfish. Women played an active role in many of the stages of food production and processing, so they had important socio-political, economic, and spiritual roles in their communities. The production of food among the Wampanoag was similar to that of many American Indian societies, and food habits were divided along gender lines. Women passed plots of land to their female descendants, regardless of their marital status. Men acted in most of the political roles for relations with other bands and tribes, as well as warfare. Women elders could approve selection of chiefs or sachems. They were also matrifocal: when a young couple married, they lived with the woman's family. The Wampanoag had a matrilineal system, like many indigenous peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands, in which women controlled property, and hereditary status was passed through the maternal line. Southern New England was populated by various tribes, so hunting grounds had strictly defined boundaries. Each community had authority over a well-defined territory from which the people derived their livelihood through a seasonal round of fishing, planting, harvesting, and hunting. The women cultivated varieties of the " three sisters" (maize, climbing beans, and squash) as the staples of their diet, supplemented by fish and game caught by the men. ![]() The men often traveled far north and south along the Eastern seaboard for seasonal fishing expeditions, and sometimes stayed in those distant locations for weeks and months at a time. The Seat of Metacom, or King Philip's seat, at Mount Hope Bay in Bristol, Rhode Island became the political center from which Metacomet began King Philip's War, the first intertribal war of Native American resistance to English settlement in North America. The Pokanoket were based at Sowams, near where Warren, Rhode Island, developed and on the peninsula where Bristol, Rhode Island, arose after King Philip's War. The earliest colonial records and reports used Pokanoket as the name of the tribe whose leaders (the Massasoit Ousemequin until 1661, his son Wamsutta from 1661–1662, and Metacom from 1662–1676) led the Wampanoag confederation at the time the English began settling southeastern New England. In 1616, John Smith referred to one of the Wampanoag tribes as the Pokanoket. Increase Mather first used it in 1676 to describe the alliance of tribes who fought against the English in King Philip's War. The word is a Lenape term for "Easterners" or literally "People of the Dawn," based on information provided by the people whom Block encountered in the lower Hudson Valley. Wampanoag probably derives from Wapanoos, first documented on Adriaen Block's 1614 map, which was the earliest European representation of the Wampanoag territory. Wampanoag people continue to live in their historical homelands and maintain aspects of their culture while adapting to changing socioeconomic needs of the mainstream society. The English sold many Wampanoag men into slavery in Bermuda, the West Indies, or on plantations and farms run by colonists in New England. The war resulted in the death of 40 percent of the surviving Wampanoag. More than 50 years later, Wampanoag Chief Sachem Metacom and his allies waged King Philip's War (1675–1676) against the colonists.
